Creative Writing + Poetry

3 am. Lying in bed staring at the glow in the dark stars on my ceiling. Inspiration strikes. Fingers flying across my laptop keyboard. This is how many of the pieces below were written. Some of these pieces were written as a form of catharsis, others based on projects/things I read up about or witnessed. Here are some of my favourite poems and short stories, from the last 5 years!

Santa Claus: A Memoir

This short story was written for the Bowseat Ocean Awareness Competition. Climate change is a really heavy topic, so I tried approaching it in a lighter, reader-friendly way while ensuring to convey the severity of the situation. I learned a lot about the importance of science communication while writing this!

The Power of a Voice (written on 4th of July, 2020)

Stuck at home during the initial stages of lockdown, this free-verse poem served as my journal, helping me release all of my pent-up emotions. The day this poem was written is particularly significant because all the numbers are accurate to that day, and the way everything fell into place perfectly was remarkable! 3 hours of non-stop writing later, this is what I ended up with:

Silkworm

In 9th grade, I learned about how silk was extracted from silkworms. Delving deep into the process, I got the opportunity to visit Devanahalli, 'the village of silk' multiple times. I wrote this on the way back home after my very first field visit.

Voices (from the perspective of a silkworm - The Bombyx Mori)

This poem was written after I completed my project on the mulberry silkworms and studied every stage of the process. The cruelty of the process weaved into the beautiful fine silk threads was one that lingered in my mind.

Bittersweet

This is one of the earliest poems I wrote, at 3 in the morning on a school night when I should have been asleep.

Two Worlds

Having recently had someone close to me pass away, the theme of loss was fresh in my mind. Writing about someone else grieving helped me in my grieving process, ending on a note of optimism.

Hide and Seek

Hide and seek or 'dabba' as we called it was one of my favourite games to play with my brother. Along with this, one of the earliest memories I have is my brother and I holding umbrellas upside down in our garden to collect the rainwater. I wrote this a few weeks after my brother left for college.

Something Has Died

This, along with 'A Secret' was written as part of a 10 day writing challenge I set for myself. I asked my mother to give me a new title of a short story everyday, and I had to write something based on that. These are my 2 favourite stories.
